Finding and keeping talent is one of the hardest aspects of running a restaurant. What can be done to help lower turnover rates and find motivated personnel? Joe DeSimone of Source One Hospitality, a recruiting firm based in Chicago, gave 6 tips to CEO of Ovation Zack Oates on what restaurants can do to have better luck with hiring:

1. Focus on Your Culture

“Culture is big and often forgotten”, says Joe. It’s important to make sure employees feel valued in what is often a thankless industry. While it’s true that employees should be grateful for job opportunities, managers need to remember that employees probably have hundreds of other opportunities in the industry, and will leave if they don’t like their current working conditions.

2. Use LinkedIn Instead of Job Boards

Online job boards can lead to success, but you’ll end up with hundreds of resumes flooding your inbox because of the ease of online applications. Joe recommends using LinkedIn to find job candidates because of it’s accessibility and the base version is free. Other social media platforms have great opportunities as well.

3. Use Your Personal Network

Ask the people you know for leads, including other restaurant owners. Maybe they’ve had good experiences with candidates but just didn’t have a good fit for them and they would be perfect for you.

4. Be Honest with Yourself and Candidates

You might need to evaluate whether your standards are too high for what you’re willing to pay. If you’re looking for a unicorn employee, but only paying donkey wages,  the unicorns either won’t take the job or will leave as soon as they find a better opportunity.

5. Contact Source One Hospitality

S.O.H. is all about relationships. They don’t just hand you a resume, but are actively finding and training candidates to be perfect for your business. They won’t charge you anything unless you hire someone, and if their recruit flips a switch and is a complete bust they’ll replace them within 90 days at no charge.
